During a time our nation was divided in a Civil War, slaves were escaping to the north for freedom. Meanwhile, a young slave boy had a dream. “I wonts to be a Union soldier, Ma. I wonts to fight to free you!” After his parents were murdered by Confederate soldiers, Henry held on to that dream. This is a story of his right of passage and courageous development through life. Growing up as an orphan, Henry Washington became the first Black Army Officer. His battles went beyond fighting the Sioux Indians; he fought prejudices, personal tragedies, and injustices. This is Henry’s journey in becoming an officer and a gentleman…

An American Soldier Dreams of a Child edition by Warren Reiten Literature Fiction eBooks

This was a great story of hope. I love how Henry never lost sight of his child hood dream of becoming a soldier. Even with the tragic loss of his parents and growing up in the orphanage, he kept sight of this dream. With a lot of hard work and the help of the Bishop his dream became a reality. The difficulties he endured from his color, never let him lose sight of his dream. He remained positive and never gave up.

After his military career was wrongly ended, he still remained positive and carried on with what he thought was right.

Later after losing his wife and daughter he still was able to live his life as a gentleman.

The story did a great job of capturing the ways of the time. The Indians feeling wronged from the white man throughout history and attacked whoever got in their way and took what they wanted.

The lives of the women, early settlers and Indians, lived very restricted lives. They were "put in their place."

I'm very grateful to be living now, with our rights and freedoms.

An American Soldier Dreams of a Child edition by Warren Reiten Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Mr. Reiten is a great guy- he put a lot of work into this book- it is a very good read.
I started it about 2pm, and put it down only to sleep. Finished it shortly after waking up the next day !!
Right on Warren
As you start this novel you ask yourself, Is this going anywhere and how? The author does a masterful job of keeping you in the flow. It is a type of book that is hard to put down. I wish had a long airline trip to read it because I didn't want to put it down. Excellent book and more readers should pick it up. It's a great addition to the shelves in the finished book section, A high recommendation.
A whole lot more than a "yarn" tying 19-century settlement history with military efforts and Indian culture, this book provides an uplifting look at a 'can-do' black man striking out his own definition of American Eceptionalism. gfg
Fun to read a book written by a North Dakota native!
